We each prepared a project to add to the Shabbat décor.

Hygiene Unit

With the winter coming, we thought it would be appropriate to learn about how to keep the germs away. We did an interesting science experiment in order to portray the importance of being sanitary.

There are so many things that we like to share with our friends, but germs are definitely not one of them! To bring this abstract concept down to a child's level, Morah spread Vaseline on her hand and then, sprinkled them with glitter. Now that we could see the "germs," some of the children shook Morah's hand. Guess what happened? The shiny "germs" spread to their own hands! Rubbing our hands on a paper towel was not good enough, and neither was washing them with water. Now, we all know next time we shop not to forget to buy lots of soap!

Zechariah feels the vaseline and glitter on his hands. "This is not real germs it's pretend!"

We love singing our Dreidel song which goes as follows:

It has a lovely body, with legs so short and thin, and when I try to spin it,
It drops and then I win!"

The Yiladim spin around like a driedel and love dancing to this song. We took it a step further and decided to create our very own dreidel made out of clay! (literally!)

I Have a Little Dreidel

It's time for Hanukkah, and Hanukkah is a time for family. This picture book features the classic holiday dreidel song, with extra rhyming verses added on. We see the family gathering at a child's house, mama and child working together to make latkes (a classic Hanukkah treat), the family lighting the menorah, and then a spirited game of dreidel.

Fostering Independence

Trying to foster a sense of independence and autonomy within the yiladim is something we work on throughout the day. When the Yiladim are given a specific task to complete and they successfully follow through, it creates a strong feeling of empowerment within them.

Block Play - Building a Zoo!

It is true that our Farm trip was a few weeks ago....well, the children are continuing to talk about that special experience. Hence, they all got together and built a farm/zoo out of blocks! Building the fence came first, followed by the animals and the 'people' visiting the zoo.

What's gonna work??? Team Work!! Together, the children try and create a sturdy structure.

Morah notices Eva is holding the blocks together and asks her why. "Because I'm pushing in the blocks so that it shouldn't fall down. If it will be straight it won't fall down!" replies Eva. In addition to the use of creativity and imagination, Math/Balance skills play a vital role during Block play.

On a beautiful Fall day, we decided go on a nature walk to enjoy and explore Hashem's beautiful world. As we walked the yiladim pointed out the beautiful colors of the trees and some remarked how crunchy the leaves are when we step on them.

As we walked, the Yiladim excitedly shouted, "Look! There's pumpkins! Like in the farm!"

"The leaves are so crunchy." Liv
"There's a lot of leaves." Tal

Morah points out an Evergreen tree. Gavriel was wondering why the evergreen trees remain green all year round. "I think it's because they still have chlorophyll to make it green," Gavriel concludes. Well, when we got back to the classroom for Story - Time we made sure to search for the answer Wikipedia and indeed - Gavriel's guess was correct! Excellent deduction!

During Leaning Circle, we discussed the science behind the pigment changes in the leaves during the Fall Seasons. Gavriel was able to associate what he learned earlier and apply it to the evergreen trees.

Our Creation Mural!

After discussing and exploring Creation of the World, we decided to paint a beautiful mural depicting the different colors each day brought.
First we painted yellow and black for day 1.
For Day 2, we added some blue paint for the sky.
For Day 3, we added many colors symbolizing the grass, flowers and trees.

Tova adds stars to the mural with the back of a paintbrush in honor of Day 4 of Creation.

Day 2/ Parshat Noach

In conjunction with Creation Day Two, when the waters above and below were separated, we decided it's a good time to explore Noach and the Ark (Teiva).

The children are working on the Day 2 Creation page. Creating a sky and a sea so blue was especially fun!

Here's our Creation Song/Chant:

Day 2, Day 2, Hashem made the sky and the sea so blue. (2x)
Day 3, Day 3, Hashem made the grass, flowers, and trees. (2x)

After learning about the different pairs of animals that went onto the Teiva, Morah noticed how many children are especially interested in horses. After searching our school library for a book about horses, we found the perfect book! The yiladim thought it was funny when reading that a baby horse is called a 'foal.'

....Well after circle time, we went to wash our hands for snack and we noticed a small 'flood' in our own sink! :) How ironic! We called Mr. Pablo to help us empty the drain.

Social Developement

Here is one small example of how our children are working on their social/emotional skills. Leah noticed Ayla was feeling sad and immediately went to give her a hug. "I want to make Ayla feel better!" says Leah in a caring manner. Many other friends took Leah's example and followed suit. What a special moment!

Day 1 - Light Exploration!

After discussing how Hashem created light and dark on Day One, we decided to discuss the properties of light and what special things it can produce. From shadows to rainbow colors, there was lots to discover. We brought in a our light table and Morah Jen guided us in our colored light exploration.

After she places the x-ray of the starfish on top of the yellow sheet , Eva excitedly concludes, "Now the star is yellow!"

Shira and Yona have a good laugh when they notice how their shadows are 'bumping' into eachother!

We took our exploration a step further and decided to trace our very own shadows! Afterwards, we took turns guessing which friend each shadow belonged to. How fun it was!

Literacy Corner:
During Story Time, we chose to read a book about the beautiful world Hashem created. Our Beautiful World, written by C & Z Blavias, the six days of creation come to life. With brightly colored photographs which appealed to the Yiladim, we can all learn together about the wonderful world that Hashem created for each of us to enjoy. While reading the book, we sang our Creation Song.

Simchat Torah Activities!

The Yiladim get to work building our sukkah out of blocks. A Sukkah needs walls and the children got to work created the walls for the Sukkah.....

We then place the Schach on top of the Sukkah.

The children add a door and table to the Sukkah.

A special surprise....going to have Snack Time in the Sukkah!

After saying the Blessing "Leishev Ba'Sukkah," the children enjoy their delicious snack.

Following Snack Time in the Sukkah we went to Shul to practice the dancing on Simchat Torah with our flags of course!

What an honor it was to have a 'Rabbi Yisroel' (Morah Cheryl's son) visit and demonstrate how it will be to dance around the Bimah seven times on Simchat Torah.

As we wave our flags and dance around the Bimah, Yisroel held the Torah and we all took turns kissing it as we passed him. What a special experience! Leah voiced her excitement when mentioning her daddy will be giving her a shoulder ride during the dancing!

Sukkos Activities!

We took a trip to the big Sukkah behind the Chabad shul, singing our Sukkos songs along the way. The Yiladim took turns making the bracha on the Lulav and Esrog. What a special Mitzva!

Hashem is everywhere!!!....After learning about the Lulav shaking in all directions we discussed the reason why. Where's Hashem? Hashem is everywhere! We shook our Lulav's up, down, frontward, and backward in order to symbolize this idea. Here's our exciting Lulav Music & Movement:

After exploring the different properties of the Lulav and Esrog we begin to compare and contrast its color and size. Here we all transform into tall Lulavim shaking back and forth. We then rolled up into a small esrog ball.

Art Center: Painting our Class Sukkah! Mixing those colors was lots of fun!

Sitting in our Sukkah and enjoying the smell of our Schach. We learned the difference between shade and sun and how the Schach ensures that in the Sukkah there will be more shade than sun. Later on, we went to the yard and noticed how the sand box is a very sunny area because there were no trees to create shade above it.
We sang our Sukkah song throughout the day.
